Spring in North Carolina

Our family moved from Salt Lake City several years ago and we have been enjoying all the surprises each season brings.  Here in North Carolina The summer is hot and it's only the bravest flowers that can manage the heat. Autumn is lovely with chrysanthemums and fall colors, there are flowers that bloom even in the winter -

camellia

But In April there there is a fragrance in the air. I catch it by accident, and it is always a pleasant surprise. The first couple April's I lived here I would look around for a bush or a flower trying to find that delightful perfume. Finally, I found the source, it was a yellow cup shaped flower.

I wondered where it had come from and I finally saw it ... way up high in the tall tree ..

 It is the tulip poplar tree.

Liriodendrom tulipifera
members of the magnoliaceae family

A magnificent tree, it is deciduous and can grow to more than 100 feet, has a wide spread and is considered the tallest hardwood in North America.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
